ChaBazar – From the Garden to Your Cup
Tea has been an integral part of Bangladeshi culture, especially in regions like Sylhet and Sreemangal, the heartland of tea cultivation. The journey of tea in Bangladesh has a rich and fascinating history that dates back to the British colonial period.
📜 Origins: The British Era
Tea cultivation in this region began during the British rule in the mid-19th century, when the British East India Company was looking to expand tea production outside China. In 1854, the very first tea garden was established in Malnichhera Tea Estate in Sylhet, which is still operational today and is one of the oldest tea estates in the subcontinent.
🌿 Growth & Expansion
- The fertile land and the subtropical climate of Sylhet, Sreemangal, Habiganj, and surrounding hilly areas made them ideal for tea cultivation.
- Over time, more than 160+ tea gardens have been established across the country, with Sreemangal famously known as the “Tea Capital of Bangladesh.”
🧑‍🌾 Role of Local Communities
The tea industry also became a source of employment for thousands, especially indigenous and tea laborer communities who migrated or were brought in during colonial times. Their contribution is still at the heart of Bangladesh’s tea legacy.
đź«– Modern Day Tea Industry
- Bangladesh is now one of the tea-producing countries in the world, both for domestic consumption and export.
- The tea varieties have also evolved – from black tea and orthodox tea to green tea, herbal infusions, and flavored blends.
- Tea has become not only a beverage but also a cultural symbol of hospitality in Bangladeshi households.
